Formerly a teacher standing on the podium, but with the passion and desire to become a doctor to save people, Dr. BS Nguyen Phu Kieu, director of the Institute for Research and Treatment of Critical Diseases, took a leave of absence from teaching to take the exam. to Hanoi Medical University. Graduating from Medical University in 1985, he was assigned to work at Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi. In 1991, he was sent by the Ministry of Health to study economics in health. Since then, he has been closely associated with the pharmaceutical industry until now.

Mr “Three in One

As the founder of a closed science and technology model, both doing research and application work as well as a manager, Dr. BS Nguyen Phu Kieu once forced himself to arrange his working time very scientifically. study, reasonable. With a passion for the profession, he has been diligently researching with the determination to bring research to life. Because, he thinks, if research is not applied in practice, it is a waste. “Doing science, that's only half the way... The closed model going from Research Institute to production (Company) and to application of research results (hospital) may not be optimal. but has overcome many disadvantages of the current discrete models. Especially the issue of quickly putting research results into practice, serving the community," said Mr. Kieu.

People call TS.BS Nguyen Phu Kieu "three-in-one" because in the past, outside of his research time at the hospital, he often went down to directly operate brain tumors with Gamma for patients, while still doing management work Management of Guilin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a Science and Technology enterprise (under the institute).

Sharing about the reason for making their choice on the path of becoming a doctor and doing scientific research, Dr. BS Nguyen Phu Kieu said that during the opening period, many people turned away from state agencies to set up a profitable business company, and he used all his capital to set up a non-governmental scientific research agency.

“So many people say it out loud, what is crazy, what is hot, what is unruly… But once you are passionate, you cannot stop. In fact, from the time I went to survey and research on herbs in Vietnam, serving for my doctoral thesis, I found that the source of medicinal herbs in our country is so diverse and rich that it has not been studied yet. reasonable and proper exploitation. The idea to establish a non-governmental scientific research agency to carry out scientific works on rare medicinal herbs of the country also started from there. That idea was something few dared to think about and dare to do at that time. Therefore, at that time, many people also advised against doing "state science" where it was still not enough, let alone doing "non-governmental science". But I think if everyone chooses the easy path, no one can contribute valuable scientific works to life. So I still decided to go to work," said Mr. Kieu.

At the beginning of the establishment of the Institute for Research and Treatment of Critical Diseases, Dr. BS. Nguyen Phu Kieu has faced many difficulties. At the beginning of its establishment, the human resources were still small, the Institute was originally named Center for Research and Development of Medicines at that time with only 7 professors, Assoc. 3 BS and 15 staff. The head office is also not available, have to rent, move many times, with many different temporary locations, sometimes in a rented apartment in Giap Bat area, sometimes in the campus of Ha Noi School of Technology and Industry. Noi, then rented an apartment in Nghia Tan Dormitory, then moved to a rented house on Phan Ke Binh Street.

In 2001, the Center was renamed the Institute for Research and Application of Medicinal Materials for Treatment of Critical Diseases (licensed by the Ministry of Science and Technology to operate). For the 5th time, the Institute had to move its headquarters to the Hydrometeorological Center (Fort Lang Street). Without a laboratory, the Institute had to coordinate with the Department of Pharmacology of Hanoi University of Pharmacy to conduct pharmacological studies. It was not until 2006, that the name was changed to the Research Institute for Treatment of Critical Illnesses as it is now. With many difficulties and sacrifices, many of their own material interests had to be sacrificed, but the Institute's staff, with their pure hearts and will and determination, made many contributions to scientific purposes.

Putting community at the center of purpose

Drug addiction treatment is a difficult problem for many countries, therefore, from the very beginning, Dr. Doctor Nguyen Phu Kieu has determined to do more than the goal of researching, exploiting and developing medicinal materials in the country. Therefore, he has focused on the directions of research and preparation of medicines from rich, diverse and rare medicinal herbs to treat dangerous diseases, mainly: drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, cancer letters. These are also the dilemmas that scientists around the world are focusing on researching. Therefore, the Institute has gathered a large number of leading doctors and pharmacologists in the country: Professor - People's Teacher Vu Van Chuyen, Professor - People's Physician Le Duc Hinh, Associate Professor Pham Kim Man, Associate Professor Nguyen Quang Bai, Associate Professor Nguyen Kim Can, Professor Tran Van Chat. In just a short time, with the effective help of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Institute has launched a number of products that have resonated greatly.

Typically, the Institute has chaired two independent state-level projects (Research on Cedemex drug production and Research and production of HIV/AIDS - Vegakiss from herbs), 1 topic. international cooperation under the Protocol between Vietnam and China (Research on the mechanism and preparation of Cedemex drugs), a state-level trial production project on the production of Cedemex drugs to supply domestic and international markets. foreign. In addition, the Institute also researches, perfects and produces a number of drugs for the treatment of benign and malignant tumors (Kacimex), treatment of inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes... from Vietnamese herbs.

Although he encountered many difficulties during the research process, with his enthusiasm he overcame those difficulties. The important thing is that he has put the community at the center, which is the goal he aims to help the community live healthy. “Doing science, first of all, towards the community, serving the community. Making medicine must come from the heart, medical ethics has no place for profit. If you calculate too much, no one will be able to research anything," said Mr. Kieu.

The research and testing of Cedemex drug started in 1995. In 2003, it was accepted by the State Scientific Council that it was safe, non-toxic, non-addictive and effective. Stabilize withdrawal symptoms such as drug cravings and paresthesias (maggots). After that, the drug Cedemex was approved by the Ministry of Health to be widely used in social labor re-education centers in some provinces and cities to treat addiction syndrome.

Dr. Dr. Nguyen Phu Kieu said, Cedemex drug support drug addiction treatment helps relieve pain, comfortable mood, maximum stabilizing effect on withdrawal symptoms, especially paresthesias and hunger. drug. After that, the patient will receive long-term maintenance therapy along with treatment to restore other dysfunctional symptoms and eliminate the cause of psychological addiction.

By this regimen will bring the patient back to the community completely normal in terms of psychopathology. This is a difference compared to other drugs circulating in Vietnam and around the world, because Cedemex is not only a gentle, safe, and non-addictive drug. Cedemex also solves the biological and psychological dependence on drugs for patients with drug addiction.

Widely deploying the model "Research, deploy and evaluate the effectiveness of Cedemex drug in supporting drug addiction treatment in the community". The drug is considered by many experts to be the "rectification" of drug addiction, and at the same time changes opinions, drug addiction is not an incurable disease. Patients who are treated with Cedemex no longer have drug cravings when they see old friends using them, control themselves without being manipulated, and no longer remember their previous cravings for drugs. In particular, Cedemex also works for patients who use synthetic drugs. The patient has returned to master his life, actively working for economic development.

Accordingly, the "natural scent of incense", the Cedemex drug addiction treatment model in the community gradually resonated and gained popularity in many provinces and cities such as Hung Yen, Kien Giang, Thai Nguyen, Lai Chau, Bac Lieu, and Dong Nai. Learn to build models. In particular, in Thai Nguyen province, the rate of 29.5% patients did not relapse after 30 months, while in Lai Chau it was 37.8%... From the initial successes mentioned above, Cedemex has had the effect of making changing perceptions in the community that drug addiction is curable. This is a very encouraging result while the world has not yet found a drug to treat this disease, only used to treat addiction with Methadone replacement drugs.

Evaluation of Cedemex treatment research topic by Dr. BS. Nguyen Phu Kieu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Binh, former Director of the Institute of Mental Health - Bach Mai Hospital - Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Hanoi Medical University, commented that Cedemex's anti-relapse ability at present. No other drug has been achieved or surpassed. Cedemex has solved drug addiction, that is, the loss of biological dependence and psychological dependence of addicts on drugs.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Binh said, from the success of Cedemex drug addiction, it shows that drug addiction can be successfully treated when there is a fusion between the drug Cedemex and the addict, with the help of the social community. Mr. Binh said that the drug Cedemex paints a picture of a promising and successful war against drugs in Vietnam in the near future and drug addiction is not incurable.

Dr. Doctor Nguyen Phu Kieu said that in the past time, Cedemex drug addiction treatment has brought very positive effects, with the results achieved, the drug brand Cedemex was honored to win the top 10 famous brands. 2019. However, the biggest difficulty today is the issue of funding, although there are many provinces that want to participate, but limited funding and resources make this difficult to do.

In the immediate future, the good news for patients' families who want to be treated in Quang Ninh is that Cedemex has been approved for pilot treatment in the province since August 2019. Considering the effectiveness of Cedemex treatment in the community, in July 2019, the Government issued a written opinion on the application of Cedemex drug treatment for drug addicts, according to which the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Health to develop Formulate and approve the Scheme and organize its implementation in accordance with the budget capacity and current regulations.

Dr. BS. Nguyen Phu Kieu said that the Institute is rushing to carry out this work with the hope of getting approval so that it can expand Cedemex treatment in a number of provinces and cities nationwide with the state budget in 2020. The scheme Construction is expected to treat addiction for 5,000 patients across 10 provinces in the period 2020-2025. After that, it will be summarized to come up with a specific regimen with the desire to continue to be replicated nationwide.

As for the Research Institute for the Treatment of Critical Diseases, the Institute tries to coordinate with the Ministry of Health's project to open 20 representative offices in 20 provinces to help drug addicts in need of home treatment with a bank account. their own books. Dr. Dr. Nguyen Phu Kieu said that this is a problem to help reduce difficulties in budget resources for the state. “There are many patients who want treatment, but because they are far away, they face many difficulties in treatment, so if the treatment model is expanded in remote areas, it will help addicts to continue receiving treatment. access to treatment, improve health and reintegrate into the community,” said Mr. Kieu.
